About The Position

As a Teaching Assistant for Penguin Foot Pottery, you’ll be involved in some of the details of a working clay studio and school. Our TAs actively contribute to the overall atmosphere of our space — from making new students feel welcome and at home, bolstering a strong sense of community, and being a kind, friendly face to all. Making folks feel safe and supported to explore their creativity is a core part of our mission.

In addition to supporting the space, TAs are responsible for:

Assisting with instruction during evening classes and workshops

Clay recycling

Day-to-day studio maintenance and cleaning

Here’s what we look for in TAs:

We ask for a 4-month commitment to working together

2 shifts per week:

  • 6:00pm-9:30pm (M-Sat) and 11am-2:30pm (Saturday) for a total of 7 hours per week
  • Must include at least one Friday or Saturday night shift per week
  • Weekend availability is a must — candidates without weekend availability will not be considered.
  • Generally, shift days can look like: Monday & Thursday, Tuesday & Friday, and Wednesday & Saturday. We of course understand that things change and life happens, so current TAs are asked to send their requested time off/schedule changes prior to each session start.

Must have basic knowledge of throwing:

TA shifts primarily deal with wheel throwing classes, so a working knowledge of throwing basics is required. All candidates should be able to confidently throw a one-pound cylinder with ease.

Must be able to lift 50 lbs

Bonus points for active community members!

Interview priority is given to students and members who are active in our community. For more information, you can check out our pages on Classes and Memberships.

Compensation

Our TA positions are considered an exchange program, not a paid position. We provide compensation in the following ways:

  • Studio access during open hours

  • 25lbs of clay per month

  • Large, dedicated shelf space

  • Opportunity to join visiting artist workshops and staff outings that may occur during your 4-month period

  • Recommendation/reference letters upon request

  • Supporting your growth as a ceramic artist through mentorship and hands-on learning

Think you might be a good fit? We’d love to meet you!
